"What to say about Sarocha? We got off to a bad start when I inquired about an airport pick-up and transfer, advising I would like one and giving my flight details. I got a reply stating a cab would cost THB 600 and then asking did I want a pick-up (?) and what were my flight details. I gave the answers, again, and asked for confirmation - which I never got. Nor did I get picked up and had to arrange my own transfer on arrival at Samui airport. Sarocha had been recommended to me and I'd booked on that basis, including breakfast. On arrival I was advised their restaurant was closed for renovation (not that anything seemed to be happening) - but to their credit they arranged for a satisfactory breakfast to be brought to me each day. I knew the place had no pool - it was not evident it also had no beach at all, simply a raised sand covered terrace, and that the whole bay front was rocks. Bungalows were clean, but very basic. Mine had a small and very basic kitchen attached. The place was riddled with mosquitoes, day and night, and around half the place seemed to be inhabited by resident long-stayers, complete with their own dogs! The biggest drawback is that the place is a long way from anywhere, at a minimum 10 minutes or so up/downhill from Hin Ta/Hin Yai and that end of Lamai Beach, and a good half hour from the main part of Lamai Beach and the centre of Lamai town. The staff were very pleasant and helpful when required; the long term stayers made one feel like one was intruding on their territory. Was it totally awful ... no. Was it very good ... no. Would I stay there again? No way. Would I recommend you stay there - no. With apologies to the staff and owners, but the place just did not appeal."

"location is key and the location of this resort was perfect. the beach in front of the hotel was beautiful. its a quiet location but can walk right down the street to have some nightlife. the resort itself is by far the best place i've stayed at. ive been to thailand four times now and have traveled the world quite a bit over the last couple of years and i have to say that this place was hands down the best resort i've stayed at. the resort as a whole is amazing and the detail from the pool to the stone walls to the statues were breath taking. i booked the sea view suite and when we walked into our room we both were shocked at how beautiful the room was. perfect view, private pool, huge deck with covered patio, the biggest bathtub i've ever seen, shower outside, huge open windows, huge comfortable bed overlooking the sea and pool, room had a permeant mint smell, room service excellent, kitchen and again the view was awesome. bottom line; i love this place! oh, i also stayed at two other resorts before staying here while in samui and this resort blew all out of the water! you're treated like a king/queen!!! :)"

"I really like this hotel. It is a small hotel but you don't really feel it because they way it is set up makes you feel like you are hidden in a tropical land and you care barely see the edge of the hotel. you only see trees and plants! You have your own bungalow covered with tropical trees and lovely plants and flowers. The hotel is very clean and the staff is very friendly. They always watch out for what you need. The guest service was nice. The food was great. Location is great too. I think it's one of the best spot on Lamai beach. "

Green Villa

"I have been here since the end of April and I have another 3 weeks to go. This is a great place to stay and very reasonably priced. The staff are very friendly without being intrusive and do their best to make your stay a good one I am staying in one of the basic bungalows which is fine for a solo traveller on a budget. They do have better rooms available if you want a little bit more luxury. There is a small swimming pool set in very well kept grounds and a restaurant which serves very good food. The beach is just over 100 meters away and some restaurants and convenience stores with ATMs just up the road in the opposite direction. I would have no hesitation in recommending this great little hotel to anybody. I intend to be back next year for another stay."

Rocky's Boutique Resort - Veranda Collection Samui (SHA Extra Plus)
Lamai,Hin Ta & Hin Yai Rocks - View on map
"If you can afford to blow it out a little, Rocky's is a fantastic experience. We stayed 4 nights as part of our honeymoon in one of the ocean front rooms (we actually had the corner room which was huge and had great views from all windows!), and while it is expensive, we felt it was worth it for what you get. The staff is SO great, especially Rock and Banana, who anticipated every single need we could have. It's true that the water in front of Rocky's is not really great for swimming, too shallow and rocky, but you can just swim in the pools, they are great! Prices for beer and food are inflated of course, as it's a resort, but we spared no expense, ate and drank all day every day, and still didn't spend more than $100 per day for both of us. The included breakfast is the best we've had in SE Asia, what a treat every morning. If you have a special occasion to celebrate or just want a getaway and can afford Rocky's, do it! We could have stayed for weeks... Note on Koh Samui--the island itself is full of resorts, traffic, thousands of tourists, not the greatest vibe as far as islands go, but if you are going to Rocky's you have no reason to leave the resort--the whole point is to stay AT the resort. It's a haven away from the rest of the crazy island. After your stay at Rocky's, head over to Koh Phangan, get a cheap bungalow, rent a motorbike, and explore Thai island life there!"

Aloha Resort

"We booked 8 nights here to be close to the WMC Muay Thai training camp, and to be honest some of the reviews were pretty damning. However we were very surprised when we arrived that the hotel property is very charming, grounds kept in beautiful condition and wowzers the pool! What a fantastic pool area with plenty of space and day beds a MAJOR bonus for this low cost hotel. The breakfast included each day was VERY good value with a chef station for eggs along with standard cereal, fresh fruit, toast and a few selections of thai food each day. The staff are friendly and approachable, the rooms spacious and fantastic views from the balcony (we stayed in a superior room facing the pool). The restaurant prices are comparable to food outside, along with the massage service so there is no reason to leave the hotel! My only feedback is the patchy wi-fi which is pretty terrible but it doesnt work in the rooms but not essential to be connected 24/7. I will defiantly be coming back!"

"stayed there 3 days together with my friend. it's a big resort with many rooms and a big nice garden. sea was very close but was too wavy for me so i preferred to lie next to pool that was nice and calm. lamai beach's main street was about 15-20 min walk away. with a bike u could go and see many sights nearby, some waterfalls, mummified monk, hin ta and hin yai etc. we took a standard room, it was well equipped - aircon, tv, fridge etc."
